Oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFBs) are the most significant waste generated by palm oil mills. For every 1 kg of CPO produced, 1 kg of OPEFBs is also produced as a solid waste residue. OPEFBs are bulky, brown and heterogeneous residues that are produced after sterilization and stripping of oil palm fruit bunches during CPO production.

The aim of this work was to study the characteristics of solid and liquid products from the torrefaction of oil palm fiber pellets (OPFP) in inert and oxidative environments. The use of biomass from residues of African oil palm (Elaeis Guineensis) would reduce emissions from CO 2 from 17.4 Tg p/year to 12.6 Tg p/year and from 350 PJ of oil p/year to 230 PJ of oil p/year. That is, 72% and 67% of the reductions respectively, obtaining an approximate monetary benefit of 45 million euros p/year ( Gustavsson et al., 2007 ).
