Methods of extraction There are basically three methods of removing oil from the raw materials: solvent extraction, hot processing or cold processing. Solvent extraction is not suitable for small-scale processing because of high capital and operating costs, the risk of fire and explosions from solvents and the complexity of the process.

Oil separation, the extraction of oil from seeds or plant parts, is accomplished by mechanical pressing, sometimes followed by chemical extraction. Mechanical pressing alone does not remove all the oil from the seed. Chemical extraction uses a solvent to remove the remaining oil that mechanical press cannot.

A screw press is a machine that extracts oil by pressing seeds and nuts through a chamber with high friction and pressure. There is no additional heat added to the process, but the seeds are squeezed using friction, which generates heat between 60 and 100°C ( Ionescu et al., 2014 ).
