The jojoba plant is a monogenetic dioecious grey-green shrub belonging to Simmondsiaceae family. It is native to the North American deserts, especially those of south western states in the United States (California, Arizona and Utah) and north western Mexico (Baja California and Sonora).

4. Conclusions. The yield of jojoba oil (with reference to total seed) that can be obtained by pressing is about 44% by weight and by first and second pressing followed by leaching is about 50% by weight. The pressure required in the hydraulic press is about 35.4 MPa to obtain the maximum amount by pressing.

Mechanical pressing of the Jojoba seeds together with a hexane extraction of the pressed Jojoba meal is the traditional way to obtain Jojoba oil [10]. The combination of the mechanical pressing with the organic solvent extraction is necessary because between 3% and 8% of the oil cannot be extracted only by mechanical process [1] .

Section snippets Pressing only To obtain the jojoba oil by pressing, a manually operated hydraulic press type (P/N, 15.011), made by SPECAC Limited (UK), with variable load (0–15) metric tons was used. For each run, about 80 g of whole jojoba seeds were placed in a cylindrical container (6.52 cm inside diameter), then were subjected to the press load.

Jojoba seeds contain up to 65% of a light golden and odourless high-viscosity liquid-oil that differs from any other oil produced by plants (Fig. 1 a, b) [4, 5]. It has wax-like unsaturated esters, consisting of a straight chain of fatty acids and higher alcohols [ 4 , 6 – 8 ].

Thus, jojoba oil is currently mechanically extracted by cold-press method, at low heat, to conserve its quality characteristics, e.g. tocopherol contents (El-Mallah & El-Shami 2009). Naturally, the oil yield of this method is relatively low, as some oil is retained in the meal (Kibbutz Hazerim, personal communication), but the resulting wax is of high quality.
